Product Review: PetSafe ScoopFree LitterBox

As a new cat mama of three young kittens who are approximately 9 months of age, trust me when I say that I’ve been through my fair share of trial and error when it comes to reviewing numerous cat-related products. Cat toys, cat treats, dry food, wet food, beds, litter boxes…you name it - I’ve tried out a LOT of different products and brands. In all honesty, there were some go-to favorites and there were some that I would never use again. If you have any questions about cat-related products or if you are planning to get a new furry friend, please don’t hesitate to DM me on Instagram at @missmisschelle - I’d be more than happy to help you go shopping for your feline friend!

But today, I wanted to specifically dive into the topic of cat litter boxes. To be completely transparent, I have tried three brands in total - Modkat, Chewy, and now PetSafe. However, I will admit that the first two brands that I bought (Modkat & Chewy) did their job, but I wasn’t particularly 5/5 star happy with the product quality.

In today’s blog post, I wanted to share my honest review of the PetSafe ScoopFree Litterbox, as this is my FIRST self-cleaning litter box I ever owned and I’m sure some of you cat mamas out there are curious about self-cleaning litter boxes if you never owned one! Well, I’m here to spill the tea on my experience with PetSafe’s ScoopFree Litterbox. Let’s go!

My boyfriend set up the litterbox in less than five minutes (easy peasy, lemon squeezy!) and please note that this litter box needs to be charged into an electrical outlet. After plugging it in, you pour the pre-packaged litter (comes with the box) into the litter box and it’s ready to go! It’s THAT simple.

Long story short, I’ve included the pros and cons below after using this self-cleaning litter box:

Pros of PetSafe ScoopFree Litter Box:

  • Easy clean-up - When you click one button on the litter box, there is this metal “rake” installed inside of the litter box that cleans up any leftover droppings. Additionally, it makes the litter “intact” by lining it up smoothly for the next time a cat needs to use the bathroom. I love this feature because I click the button whenever I see that the litter box has been used (ex: every time I leave the house before work). It’s kind of an addiction to click this button, tbh LOL.

  • Less hopping and less mess from cats - With my previous litter box purchases, I noticed that my rowdy male felines JUMP with all their might out of the litter boxes, causing a HUGE grainy mess on my floor every single day (sigh). Even litter box “mats” can’t solve this issue at times. I noticed that with this specific litter box, Soba and Pancake simply walk out of the box with ease without having the need to jump because it’s low enough where they can cross over it - which is an ultimate WINNER in my opinion. A less grainy wood floor means I’ll be stepping on litter less often - I see a bright future ahead of me!

  • Worth every penny in the long run - If I’m going to be completely honest with you, one of the daily chores that I dread after a tiring day of work includes scooping the litter box. Not only do I have to bend down at an uncomfortable angle to do this task, but also - who really enjoys cleaning poop? LOL. I’m totally fine if it’s cleaning up for just one cat, but when you have three…it’s a WHOLE different story. Owning a self-cleaning litter box really changes the game and helps me save time in the long run. After all, a few seconds saved per day becomes minutes and hours over the course of a few years. I honestly wish I had purchased all self-cleaning litter boxes when I first rescued these kittens!

  • Quiet & smooth - When you click the cleanup button, the device isn’t outrageously loud or annoying. If anything, it creates a soft “humming” sound and my cats actually are intrigued watching the entire metal “rake” move through and clean their litter. It’s like another toy or source of entertainment for them, LOL. Soba and Pancake specifically love to watch the metal rake do its thang!

  • Pre-packaged litter - Comes with pre-packaged litter, woohoo!

Cons of PetSafe ScoopFree Litter Box:

  • Higher pricepoint than your average litter box - I’m the type that prioritizes quality over quantity so a $$$ price to me is worth it if it makes clean-up easier in the long run. Plus, I believe all of the litter boxes that I purchased were in the $$$ range, LOL. However, if you are on a tight budget, I probably would recommend a more affordable option.

  • Not ideal for multiple cats (unless you work from home) - I think this product is best suited for one cat. Owning three cats has taught me just HOW much multiple litter boxes are needed. However, this litter box will still work if you own two or more cats, but you’d have to click the “cleaning” button more often. Since I own three kittens and work at the office for 8 hours, I definitely have litter boxes all over the house - including this one! I wouldn’t depend solely on this litter box to take care of my cats, but it’s nice to have in addition to my other litter boxes!

  • Pre-packaged litter - This may not apply to all cats, but my cats are definitely curious and playful so unfortunately, they started eating the litter because they have never seen these crystals before. I ended up changing the litter so that they stop eating it, but the litter box works just fine with our litter :) I’d monitor your cat(s) for the first 30 minutes when using this litter box to see if they eat the litter or not - just to be safe!

All in all, I have to say that I love this scoopfree litter box by PetSafe. I truly believe that the quality of this product is worth its pricepoint and I wish I honestly invested in more self-cleaning litter boxes from the getgo, as my previous litter boxes are more expensive than this product! If you’re looking to purchase this exact product, I’ve included the exact link here for you to browse.

Lastly, I want to add that there are three different styles of this litter box on Amazon - front entry, top entry, and uncovered. I currently own the Uncovered and it is $30 cheaper than the Front or Top Entry products and to be honest, I would actually recommend Uncovered so your felines are less likely to “jump” out of the litter box and create a grainy mess upon exiting.
